Seven passenger jets were forced to make emergency landings in the past 24 hours after bomb threats were reported.
Hoax calls have caused chaos across Italy, Spain, Bulgaria and Poland. In the UK, two flights from London Heathrow and Manchester were also affected by bomb threats.
During its journey, a Wizz Air flight from London Luton to Bulgaria was threatened and escorted by a fighter jet. A Ryanair flight from Manchester to Murcia received a bomb threat during the flight.
Security checks may cause delays even for flights not directly affected by threats, as aircraft and crew may be at the wrong airport after a diversion, leading to further disruption. Security checks may require repositioning of aircraft or replacement crew.
Most UK flights are running as normal despite the threats. Passengers are advised to check their flight status before heading to the airport. Disruption from one incident may not lead to widespread cancellations across UK airports. No explosives were found during security checks of the affected flights.
