The Chrysanthemum Garden in Srinagar opened on October 23, known as Bagh-e-Gul-Dawood, to extend Kashmir's tourism season into autumn. The garden showcases 3.5 lakh locally produced chrysanthemum plants arranged in vibrant yellow, red, pink and purple displays. It houses more than 70 varieties of chrysanthemums and nearly 12 million flowers in different colours and shapes.
The Department of Floriculture, Parks and Gardens manages the site, which sits within the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Botanical Garden complex. The garden attracted nearly 53,000 visitors in its first 14 days, with around 60 per cent of them being domestic tourists from different parts of the country and nearly 400 foreign tourists.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah plans to expand the attraction each year to fill Kashmir's autumn tourism gap. It will remain open throughout November if temperatures stay above freezing.
Last year's inaugural show had around one lakh chrysanthemum plants; this year's display is significantly larger. The garden was developed at a cost of Rs 1.869 crore and will remain open in November, subject to favourable weather conditions.
