The Supreme Court took up a suo motu case concerning air pollution in Delhi-NCR, with Chief Justice Surya Kant making a pointed remark: 'Hope you are enjoying Delhi weather.' The court heard the matter as Delhi's air quality index (AQI) reached severe levels, with 30 monitoring stations recording 'severe' conditions on November 6, 2026. Rohini recorded the worst AQI of 475 on that day, while the overall AQI in Delhi was 391.

The court highlighted vehicular emissions as the major cause of pollution in the region and noted that traffic congestion is a significant contributing factor. It also mentioned that stubble burning contributes about 14% to Delhi's pollution levels on Thursday, November 5, 2026.

The Centre has introduced measures such as restrictions on entry of certain vehicles, geo-tagging of PUC certificates, and action against visibly polluting vehicles through complaints received via applications and social media.

The Supreme Court discussed the need for immediate, medium, and long-term measures to address pollution. It also said that closing schools during high AQI would depend on expert opinion and directed authorities to submit action plans for pollution control.

The Bench said it would pass orders and take up the plea on 16 November after the court reopens following the Diwali vacation.
