Kerala's responsible tourism model is reshaping the state's travel industry by placing local communities at its core. The Kerala Responsible Tourism Mission Society, led by CEO Rupeshkumar K., works to integrate rural livelihoods, local culture and environmental conservation into tourism initiatives.

Homestays and the sale of local produce provide financial opportunities for villagers. Women in rural areas are particularly benefiting from these efforts, gaining greater economic independence. The model also ensures that women and marginalised communities are included in tourism projects through collaboration with Local Self-Governments.

A key part of this initiative is the Tourism Grama Sabhas, where villagers identify their area's resources and contribute to tourism planning. The PEPPER initiative supports participatory planning and empowerment through responsible tourism.

Kerala's model has won 24 national and international awards, including a 'Pioneering Contribution to Responsible Tourism' award for Rupeshkumar K. from ICRT Global.

Unlike traditional models that concentrate tourism in a few popular spots, Kerala's approach spreads benefits more evenly across the state, ensuring sustainable and inclusive growth.
