Indian Railways has announced plans to quadruple seven major rail corridors as part of a capacity expansion aimed at reducing congestion and eliminating passenger waiting lists. The project focuses on key national routes that connect major economic hubs.

The golden quadrilateral includes the cities of Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, and Mumbai, while the diagonal corridors include routes such as Delhi to Chennai, Mumbai to Kolkata, and Delhi to Guwahati. Over 36,000 kilometres of additional tracks have been laid in the last 10 years as part of this ongoing effort to increase railway capacity.

Once the four-lining is completed, over 1,000 additional trains will operate on these routes. The Prime Minister has frequently approved new rail projects in cabinet meetings, indicating strong support for the initiative.
